Owner: Every American Should
Have The Right To Own Exotic Animals

The debate over whether a tiger
can remain as an attraction at a Grosse Tete truck stop has been clawed at for
years. A state judge ruled that the Tiger Truck Stop owner could no longer keep
his tiger, Tony, at the gas station. Michael Sandlin, Tony’s owner, said
thousands have come to marvel at the exotic animal on display at the truck stop.
“We’re from Florida and we were on our way to Texas and it was kind of amazing
to see a big cat here,” said Jody McGahan, a Tiger Truck Stop customer. “He’s
beautiful” “Every American should have the right to own an exotic animal of
their choice if they’re financially and morally capable of taking care of that
animal,” Sandlin said. The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries gave Sandlin a
permit to keep the tiger, but a nonprofit group, the Animal Legal Defense Fund
filed a lawsuit against the agency in a bid to have the cat moved to a more
natural setting.

“They want to yank him
from the only home he’s known for the past 10 years and the people that he’s
known and send him to another cage somewhere where he won’t have that,” Sandlin
said.

The paddock the animal is kept in appears larger than some zoo
exhibits with a grassy area, a tank for the tiger to swim in, toys, shade and an
air conditioned room for Tony. The barred cage is surrounded by a barbed-wire
fence and the truck stop is staffed 24 hours, Sandlin said. Regardless, a judge
will have to decide if the attraction will be allowed to stay. “He’s beautiful.
I would miss him,” McGahan said. Sandlin hasn’t filed an appeal yet, but his
attorney said he plans to do so. The Animal Legal Defense Fund said it will
“continue to do everything we can to make sure Tony’s next home is a reputable,
accredited sanctuary that can give Tony the life he deserves.”

For Legal Reasons this was not going to be posted until after the trial but since 2 pages have already posted it- I guess there is NO reason not to share it now. Think about it – why would Sandlin get a physical for Tony right before court? Use your common sense…..

DO NOTICE HOW SHANNON THE VET DARTS TONY ON TOP OF THE
CONCRETE DEN THEREFORE HE CAN FALL OFF AND BREAK HIS NECK. WOULD IT HAVE BEEN
SO HARD TO THROW A PIECE OF MEAT DOWN ON THE FLOOR SO HE WAS NOT IN DANGER OF
FALLING????? SO IN REALITY THE MOST DANGEROUS PART OF SEDATING TONY WAS THAT
THE VET DID IT IN A PLACE WHERE HE COULD HAVE FELL AND BROKE
BONES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RIGHT FROM THE START THE LIES BEGIN- TONY HAS ONLY HAD A VET SINCE 2008. HE NEVER HAD ONE BEFORE. 2.) AFTER ALL THE FIGHTING ABOUT SEDATION LOOK WHAT THEY DID. ★★★MESSAGE FOR JOE EXOTIC-MR. EXCUSE ME! YOU DO NOT “CLEAN” TEETH WITH PLIERS- YOU PULL TEETH WITH THEM. YOU GUYS REALLY THINK WE ARE A BUNCH OF REALLY DUMB PEOPLE………
THE VIDEO SAYS TONY PASSES WITH FLYING COLORS……… HOW COULD YOU POSSIBLY KNOW THAT WITHOUT GETTING THE TEST RESULTS BACK??????

THIS IS WHAT JAMES PLATT POSTED: “that is one awful song! too bad you had to have this done, but it proves you were right and Tony is okay”.

Just when I loose faith in our youth today, along comes an 11 year old young lady with a passion for large cats. Well, all my loyal listeners know that the way to my heart is through cats of all shapes, sizes, and breeds. This one young person has made it her mission to save Tony The Tiger who has been locked in a cement and iron prison, alone, for over 10 years at a truck stop while putting up with being alone, teased, harrassed, loud sounds at all hours of the day and night and inhaling toxic fumes.
Join me as I talk to this little package of huge inspiration and we will hear all about what she has done to help Tony become free. Now we have won one battle. The owner of the truck stop was denied a renewal license to keep Tony but his current license doesn’t end until the end of December. Poor Tony needed to be set free 10 years ago!
So be sure not to miss this show. Let little Breawna inspire you just as she has inspired me and hundreds of other people whom she has met. She even created a T-shirt line to help free Tony.
See you in cyberspace. Pawz up! Ice……..

In continuing coverage of Tony the truck stop tiger and the issue of private ownership of exotic and wild species, Animal Policy Examiner spoke by telephone with Tony’s exhibitor Michael Sandlin, owner of Tiger Truck Stop on Interstate 10 in Grosse Tete, Louisiana.
Below, please see Part Two of a three-part Q&A interview with Sandlin.

(Read Part One.)

Background
In May, responding to a lawsuit by Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) against Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), State District Judge Michael R. Caldwell ruled that the agency must grant no new ownership permits to Tiger Truck Stop of Grosse Tete after the current one expires in December.

However ALDF hopes to convince Caldwell to revoke the current permit, so that the ten-year-old, 550-pound Siberian-Bengal can be removed sooner from what the group says are unhealthy, unsafe, and uncomfortable conditions in a roadside exhibit at the Interstate 10 business, and relocated to a suitable big cat sanctuary.

Recently the judge denied Tiger Truck Stop owner Michael Sandlin’s request that he be allowed to participate in court proceedings about Tony.

Q&A WITH MICHAEL SANDLIN – Part Two of Three

ANIMAL POLICY EXAMINER (APE): Mr. Sandlin, I understand you’re saying that Tony is not kept in a concrete enclosure all the time, that he has the option of the grassy play area. I think there are people who say, nevertheless, that that’s not a very natural environment for him. For instance in the wild, they have a range of I forget how many square miles. They say that Tony would be better off at some sort of sanctuary where he had more space, and more opportunities to express his natural behaviors than he does at your truck stop. What would be your response there?

MICHAEL SANDLIN: There’s a difference between captivity and the wild. That’s not I guess what all of them are saying. Some of them say that. And the difference between a tiger being in its natural habitat is of course that natural habitat is shrinking. And the tiger’s lifespan in captivity is somewhere between 20 and 25 years, and it’s about half that in the wild. The tiger has veterinary care, a proper diet, and one-on-one attention. Who’s to say that’s not better than the alternative?
And of course as far as the sanctuaries, I’ve seen several of the sanctuaries and some of them are a better situation and some of them are not. I mean, basically the sanctuary that most of these people want to send Tony to is a disgrace to me, and it’s basically taking him from one cage and putting him in another. I would much rather Tony stays where he’s at home, and not be put through that kind of traumatic transfer.

APE: So you think it would be difficult for him psychologically to make a change at this point in his life?

SANDLIN: Well, I mean he would probably have to be sedated, and he would have to be coerced into some kind of transport, and then carried off to some strange place.
And possibly he could never be put with other tigers. He’s fully intact—he has all his teeth and claws, he’s not neutered, he’s not altered in any way, and he couldn’t be put with tigers that didn’t have claws, for example.
It’s possible that he could be acclimated with other tigers that have claws and teeth and are fully intact, but again, it’s… Tigers in the wild are loners. I think it’s what they get used to. If the tiger is used to being with other cats, and then all of the sudden there are no more, then I think the tiger would grieve, would have a grieving process of missing those other cats. But outside of that I don’t think it’s a necessary or a natural thing for them outside of mating to search out other tigers.
I think it’s more of a human aspect of seeing the tiger by himself, and us being humans, and desiring connections with other human beings, to feel sorry for him and say, “Oh, he’s lonely.” But that’s not the case. That’s our own selves placing that scenario on the tiger when the tiger may not feel that way.

APE: There’s a documentary that you might or might not have seen yet—it’s new, it just came out this spring, I think. It’s called The Elephant in the Living Room. And it features a gentleman who is a police officer, but he has devoted a lot of his time to the issue of whether or not folks should keep exotic or wild animals in captivity.

SANDLIN: Including these sanctuaries that we’re talking about?

APE: Well, I don’t know exactly. I just know that—

SANDLIN: Or are they special? You know what I’m saying? It’s the same thing. I mean these animals, although they are exotic, and in the case of Tony he’s an exotic and dangerous animal, I mean he could very easily kill his owner or anyone else, given the opportunity. I’m not saying that he would, but he is certainly capable of doing that. I mean, they can hurt you just playing with you.
These animals are fully capable of being affectionate. I’ve had cats that I’ve spent a lot of time with, and could go in with them, and could walk them on a leash, and that sort of thing. And there’s people that have them in their homes.
Look at Siegfried and Roy, and there’s some kind of argument as to whether the latest attack was the tiger’s fault or not. They don’t seem to believe that it was, but there’s a lot of people out there that have had a lot of [unintelligible word] with these kinds of animals but I’ve always taught that never forget they’re tigers. You’re dealing with something that can kill you, so always keep that in mind.
But I believe that there’s people out there that don’t believe that, and I think that might be a reason to have rules and regulations to protect people from animals, but it’s not a reason to take away their right to own that animal if they’re morally and financially and physically located and in a situation that would allow them to do so. And they should have a right to own the animal of their choice.

APE: You’re putting your finger on exactly the point that this fellow Tim Harrison—he’s a police officer, like I said, and he’s handled a lot of cases involving private ownership of wild animals—and that was his main issue when I interviewed him. He kept repeating that he’s really concerned that these animals oftentimes do cause harm to their owners or to people handling them.
He feels that private ownership of such animals is just a really bad idea. And at one point, the question he asked was, “There are so many dogs and cats dying in shelters right now, why don’t these folks adopt those animals instead of these exotic, wild animals that don’t belong in private settings?”

SANDLIN: Well, I have three house cats as well. I have twelve ducks, nine chickens, and four baby chicks, and I’ve always had pets. I’ve had friends that have had big dogs, and I’ve known big dogs that have attacked their owners and other people. Where do you draw the line?
Some day, what if they come to you and say you have to get rid of those dogs that you have, because I don’t think you should have those dogs, because they can turn around and bite you? That’s your choice. If you want to have pets then it’s your choice to have pets, and whatever risk is involved for you to have those pets and to love them and care for them… if they can turn and bite you or harm you in any way, then that’s the risk that you’re taking. If you’re of sound mind, I think you should have the right to have those dogs in the home.
We’re not talking about dogs here, we’re talking about tigers, but it’s all the same principle. There’s a lot of people in the country right now that are having to surrender these animals—their exotic animals—not just tigers but all kinds of exotic animals, because their rights are being taken away from them, and they’re having to surrender these animals to sanctuaries, or they’re having to pack up all their belongings and sell their homes and pack up their animals that they love, and they’re having to move to another state that still allows them to own these animals.
Unfortunately Louisiana is one of the states that has caved into these animal rights activists and passed legislation that bans private ownership and there are some people in the state that have had to give up their animals and/or moved to another state that allowed them to keep them.

APE: What’s next for you, Mr. Sandlin? I understand you’re taking some action to establish a legal standing for yourself? I’m sorry I’m not a lawyer and I don’t understand all these things, but you’ve taken some action so that you can fight the judge’s decision recently. Can you explain what that is?

SANDLIN: Well, yeah, the latest action was by the Animal Legal Defense Fund, and by the way, they’ve already got it all over their website that they’re claiming victory and that they need your donations to help them keep fighting. And again, that’s how they make money. I understand that. But I question their motivation. I don’t think any of these people have lifted one finger or spent one red cent to do anything to help Tony, and they’re sitting there making thousands of dollars off of Tony by doing what they’re doing. And I think that it’s wrong.
But the question about the lawsuit with the Animal Legal Defense Fund and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries… Basically ALDF sued Wildlife and Fisheries, and I wasn’t invited to the party. I knew about the lawsuit via the media, and I didn’t know about the hearing until it was reported on the local news station that the hearing was taking place that day.
And I really didn’t think they were going to get anywhere with it, but they did. They got the judge to rule that Wildlife and Fisheries couldn’t issue any further permits. And that would mean that my current permit, when it expires on December 31, 2011, that I wouldn’t be issued another permit, and that I would have until that time to relocate Tony.
But I have filed a petition of intervention and basically that petition says that my civil rights were violated, that these two entities [ALDF and LDWF] went to court, and without my participation or without my being allowed to present evidence or an argument of any kind, decided what to do with my property. And we’re requesting a new hearing. If he [the judge] rules against us in our petition, we’re prepared to file an appeal and take it to a higher court. So the fight is far from over.

Recently the judge denied Tiger Truck Stop owner Michael Sandlin’s request that he be allowed to participate in court proceedings about Tony.

Q&A WITH MICHAEL SANDLIN – Part Three of Three

ANIMAL POLICY EXAMINER (APE) You sound pretty determined to keep Tony there at Tiger Truck Stop. Why is that, Mr. Sandlin?

MICHAEL SANDLIN: Well, I like Tony, and I make sure that he’s very well taken care of, and I don’t want him to go. So yes, I’m determined, and nobody likes to be pushed. I have retired cats before. I had two cats that lived in this exhibit for 18 years and had 13 cubs. I retired them to Tiger Haven. It’s outside of Knoxville, Tennessee. From what I understand the lady told me they lived another four years there and died of natural causes.
One of the first cubs that was born there at the Tiger Truck Stop, Shere Khan, he’s still alive and living there at Tiger Haven.
And two of our cubs, or cats, Sugar and Sassy, are located at the Zoo of Acadiana in Broussard, Louisiana.
I’ve traded tigers with other breeders—you know, the cubs—and I sold one to a gentleman in Florida that had a traveling animal show and had a lot of other big cats. From getting to know him, from being a truck driver, I knew that the cat would be taken care of. Her name was Gloria.
So I mean it’s just a lot of good things that have happened with the tigers and I hate to see him [Tony] go, you know?

APE: Why did the tigers you mentioned—the ones that went to the sanctuaries, for instance the one in Tennessee—why did those need to go to sanctuaries?

SANDLIN: Well, at that time the two of them, the mommy and the daddy, Toby and Rainbow, were about 19 years old. Rainbow had had 13 cubs, and she showed that. I mean, the skin on her belly hung down low. She had developed some arthritis in her back legs as a result. She didn’t walk crippled or anything but she just walked real easy on her back legs.
And so in an exhibiting situation, people would go up and they would see Rainbow, and they would see how big she was, and the skin hanging down underneath, you know, made her look so big, and she walked kind of easy. They didn’t understand that she had had 13 cubs and was 19 years old, which is very old for a tiger, so it was time to retire Toby and Rainbow due to old age and not exhibit them anymore.
And then Shere Khan, who was one of the first cubs born at the truck stop, he was a fully intact male tiger, and I had just gotten Tony at that time. And Shere Khan and Toby, although they were father and son, were enemies, you know, they were two males, and they didn’t like the idea of having to share the exhibit with each other and we had to be very careful to not let them get into direct contact with each other because they would fight and one of them would be injured.
It just made managing the exhibit, moving the tigers around for cleaning and that sort of thing, it made it a hard situation. And so I made the decision to retire Shere Khan as well, and just keep the youngest male, and that was Tony. And that’s the tiger that I have today.

APE: Who pays for the care of the tigers you gave to those sanctuaries? Is that something that’s handled by donations from their donors? Or did they ask you for help with that?

SANDLIN: Well, actually I called them to relocate Toby and Rainbow and Shere Khan, and you know, it was all friendly and above the table. But from what I understand, after they came and got Toby and Rainbow and Shere Khan, they plastered it all over their website that they rescued them, even though they did not rescue them. I called them so that they could bring in some donations.
And yes, these people depend on donations to feed and take care of their cats, So again, I understand their quest for money. My question for these groups is they take in so much money, where does all that money go? Because it’s not being spent on their animals.

APE: You mean the group that you gave those tigers to?

SANDLIN: I have no idea. I’m talking specifically about some other groups. I’m not going to— As far as I know, Tiger Haven seems to be a good place. They seem to be taking good care of their animals, so I’m not placing them in the same category as Big Cat Rescue of Tampa, Florida, or PETA that kills 97% of the animals that they take in, or The Humane Society of the United States that takes in millions of dollars every year, then rescues animals and dumps them on local shelters without giving them a penny to help take care of the animals that they dump on them.
No, I don’t have anything against Tiger Haven, other than that they were a little dishonest about stating that it was a rescue when it wasn’t.

APE: You were not required, though, to give them any funding or any money or any payment to take care of those tigers?

SANDLIN: No. I was not required to do that.

APE: You’re very upfront about the fact that you have Tony as an attraction and that he does help you pull in some business. Do you think that your business would suffer if Tony were taken away?

SANDLIN: I think the business would suffer. But at this point I’m hoping that prior to relocating Tony in the event that he ever became ill or something went wrong, or hopefully best case scenario due to old age, that between now and then that I can do some kind of major expansion and maybe put in a tiger museum as an attraction, and that at that point in time be able to replace Tony and the live tiger exhibit with some other attraction. So that’s kind of what I’m working toward. The fact that there’s a death sentence on the exhibit and once Tony is gone I can’t get any more tigers, I need to think for the future and try to move into something else.

APE: So you’re thinking about a tiger museum?

SANDLIN: Right. It would display all of the pictures and stories and all of the paraphernalia that I’ve accumulated over the years, and even go further and try to promote saving the tigers’ natural habitat in the wild, and educating the public on tigers in captivity versus tigers in the wild, and just all kinds of stuff that I could put in that museum.
It would be a good thing to do, number one, and number two, it would be an attraction that would remain for the business long after Tony is gone.

APE: That would be quite an ending for this story.

SANDLIN: Well, I think that’s a good thing to try to work toward. Unless there’s some kind of change in Louisiana law that allows people to own exotic animals, I think that’s where we have to go.
I’d be glad if the law changed, but if not, I think that’s what’s in front of me. It would be good to, number one, do some kind of major expansion and number two, I think the museum’s a good idea whether there’s a tiger there or not. But I think it would be a way—once Tony’s gone and there are no tigers to still promote and educate the public—to promote tigers’ survival in the wild and that sort of thing. And maybe be supportive of some of the good organizations that are out there.

APE: If you do succeed in keeping Tony there, are you saying that— I might have misunderstood, but did you mention that you might be doing an expansion of his habitat?

SANDLIN: Well, I mean, you know that’s always a possibility as well. I think Tony’s habitat is adequate, but there are always things that can be done to improve it. There’s a lot of things that can be done to improve his current situation.
It’s a shame that all this money is having to be spent on attorneys and fighting with these people. But that seems to be what they’re interested in doing. Outside of the Louisiana Humane Society, which in October brought out some pumpkins and chew toys and meaty bones, and I allowed them to give them to Tony, they are the only ones that have ever spent one red cent or lifted one finger to do anything that benefited Tony.
All of these other groups simply want to spread their lies and raise their money, and take in the donations from exploiting Tony that way, and aren’t concerned about doing anything to help Tony in his current situation. They simply want to take him away from me.
The fact that Tony is there because of the idea to have an attraction—I know it’s something that they have accused me of, but it’s not something that I’ve ever denied. You know, you can come to Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete and you can see Tony for free. If you want to go to some of these other sanctuaries then you can pay big money and go in and see their cats, you know? Go figure. But Tony doesn’t depend on the next donation to be fed. He doesn’t have to compete with 150 other big cats for attention or veterinary care or anything. He has one-on-one attention and he’s in a good place right where he’s at.

APE: Thank you, Mr. Sandlin. Really appreciate your spending this time with us today.

SANDLIN: I appreciate your letting me tell my side of the story.
