IT IS SAID SOMEWHERE~”THAT OUT OF EVERY BAD THERE IS A GOOD”, “FROM EVERY NEGATIVE THERE IS A POSITIVE”. I SIT HERE TODAY, AND FINALLY BELIEVE AND UNDERSTAND BOTH STATEMENTS…….

ON MARCH 25/11, I INTRODUCED MYSELF TO SYBELLE FOXCROFT. ON THAT DAY I HAD NO IDEA TO BE HONEST WITH YOU, WHO EXACTLY SYBELLE FOXCROFT WAS. I KNEW SHE APPEARED ON JANE VELEZ-MITCHELL’S “ISSUES” THE NIGHT THAT TONY’S STORY WAS AIRED, BUT I WAS NOT SURE WHO AND EXACTLY WHAT HER CONNECTION WAS…..AND THEN SHE TOLD ME….

SO NOW LET ME TELL YOU ALL….

THE NIGHT TONY AIRED ON “ISSUES” THERE WAS ALSO A STORY FOLLOWING TONY’S ABOUT ” THAILAND’S TIGER TEMPLE”. SYBELLE FOXCROFT WAS THE WOMAN ON THE PHONE *SPEAKING FROM TIGER TEMPLE.

UNLIKE ALL OF YOU WHO MAY HAVE HEARD OF CEE4LIFE BY NOW AND OF COURSE TIGER TEMPLE. I AT THAT TIME NEW VERY LITTLE ABOUT IT. AS THIS WOMAN BEGAN TO TELL ME WHO SHE WAS, MY HEART LITERALLY STARTED RACING. WHEN THIS WOMAN STARTED TO UNRAVEL SMALL PIECES FOR ME OF HER ACCOMPLISHMENTS~” ONE” BEING SHE WAS ABLE TO BRING TO A STOP “THE WILDLIFE TRADE” AT TIGER TEMPLE IN THAILAND DUE TO HER STRONG DEDICATION AND CONTINUOUS MEDIA COVERAGE SHE HAS BROUGHT DOWN ON TIGER TEMPLE~I SAT AND READ HER WORDS IN AWE….

WHEN SHE TOLD ME THAT SHE HAD BEEN FIGHTING TIGER TEMPLE FOR 5 YEARS , AND SHARED WITH ME ABOUT HER “BOY”~HARNFA. THE TIGER THAT CAPTURES HER HEART(like Tony has captured ours) AND THAT HIS FREEDOM IS WHAT MAKES HER NEVER GIVE UP….WHEN SHE SAID TO ME:

“Every thing I have done, has been in the hope that I can free my Harnfa, I wont give up on him, until his last breath.

Tony is a part of that now.”……WHEN SHE SAID TO ME THAT SHE” WANTED TO HELP TONY” ~

“It would be an honor if I could do this for him”

I SAT ON MY CHAIR AT MY COMP. AND I CRIED…..

THERE HAVE BEEN MANY PEOPLE (AS YOU ALL KNOW) THAT HAVE OFFERED TO HELP TONY, AND THEIR WORDS OF HOPE , SIMPLY STAYED AT THAT…..AS WORDS.

SYBELLE FOXCROFT I HAVE COME TO FIND OUT, IN THE SHORT TIME I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF BEING ACQUAINTED WITH HER. ” IS DEDICATED, LOYAL, RESPECTFUL, GRACIOUS , AND THROUGH ALL THE HARD WORK SHE HAS ACCOMPLISHED IN HER LIFE, IS THE MOST KIND, GROUNDED , HUMBLE, NOBLE PERSON. NOT LOOKING FOR THE RECOGNITION IN ALL THAT SHE HAD DONE….BUT LOOKING FOR THE JUSTICE IN THOSE WHO HAVE HAD THEIR SPIRITS ROBBED, THEIR LIVES STOLEN, AND TO BRING AN END FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SUFFERED/ARE SUFFERING AND DYING IN VAIN.

SYBELLE WILL SOON GO TO INDIA FOR HER “FREEDOM WALK FOR TIGERS”, (see attached link above), WHERE SHE CONTINUES TO WORK , OPEN (CLOSED EYES) AND MAKE AWARENESS “HOW CRITICAL THE STATE OF THE LAST REMAINING TIGERS ON THIS PLANET REALLY IS”.

I HAVE ON MANY OCCASIONS BEEN ASKED FROM PEOPLE, OR VARIOUS SURVEYS~”WHO DO I CONSIDER A HERO, OR WHO IS A HERO TO ME”. I NEVER KNEW HOW TO RESPOND TO THAT UNTIL NOW. SYBELLE YOU ARE MY HERO, AND IT IS CLEAR TO ME NOW THAT I AM INCLUDED ON THAT LONG LIST OF PEOPLE WHO THINK THIS OF YOU. IT IS AN INCREDIBLE HONOR TO BE ON THAT LIST OF PEOPLE WHO THINK OF YOU THIS WAY.

WITH SYBELLE’S PERMISSION I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO INCLUDE THIS LINK WHICH WILL GIVE YOU A CLOSER PEAK AT THIS MAGNIFICENT WOMAN DOING WHAT SHE DOES BEST….A WOMAN WHO THROUGHOUT ALL OF THIS~HAS OFFERED TO HELP TONY.

FREEDOM Walk for the Tigers ~ Sybelle Foxcroft

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release)Apr 18, 2011 – Speak Out for Tony!

Join the Animal Legal Defense Fund in urging the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to revoke the permit that allows Michael Sandlin to display Tony, a ten-year-old Siberian-Bengal tiger, at the Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete, Louisiana, where he has lived with no other tiger companions since 2003.

In addition to being subjected to noise and diesel fumes 24-hours a day, Tony is also frequently harassed and taunted by visitors at the truck stop. His enclosure is devoid of adequate enrichment, such as logs, trees, or complex vegetation that would allow him to engage in natural tiger behaviors. He has no pool of water large enough to allow him to submerge himself to cool off in the blazing heat of the summer. As a result of the stress of his confinement, Tony constantly paces on the hard concrete surface of his enclosure, putting him at risk for dangerous and painful veterinary conditions. Michael Sandlin, the owner of Tony and the truck stop, has been cited by the USDA due to violations of the Animal Welfare Act, including a lack of proper sanitation and improper feeding practices.

On April 11, 2011, ALDF filed a lawsuit against the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and its secretary Robert Barham, arguing that he violated state law in granting a permit allowing Sandlin to exhibit Tony at the Tiger Truck Stop.

Join the Animal Legal Defense Fund in urging the state of Louisiana to revoke the permit that allows Tony to be kept at the Tiger Truck Stop—a permit that violates both state and local ordinances designed to protect people and wild animals like Tony.

Petition to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries

I join the Animal Legal Defense Fund in urging the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to revoke the permit that allows Michael Sandlin to display Tony, a ten-year-old Siberian-Bengal tiger, at the Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete, Louisiana, where he has lived with no other tiger companions since 2003.

Tony has spent every day and night of the last decade at the Tiger Truck Stop, where he is subjected to the stench of fuel and the deafening noise of diesel engines 24-hours a day.

What’s more, Tony is frequently harassed and taunted by visitors at the truck stop. His enclosure is devoid of adequate enrichment, such as logs, trees, or complex vegetation that would allow him to engage in natural tiger behaviors. He has no pool of water large enough to allow him to submerge himself to cool off in the blazing heat of the summer. As a result of the stress of confinement, Tony constantly paces on the hard concrete surface of his enclosure, putting him at risk for dangerous and painful veterinary conditions.

Tony’s confinement is clearly inhumane — and, as the Animal Legal Defense Fund is now arguing in court, it is also illegal, as your Department violated state law in granting Michael Sandlin’s permit. Please follow the regulations already set by the State of Louisiana to protect members of the public and tigers such as Tony by revoking Sandlin’s permit immediately.

Animal Legal Defense Fund Sues for Truck Stop Tiger’s Freedom

In her latest PSA to help animals, actress Kristin Bauer says, “My character, the vampire Pam on True Blood, fends for herself just fine in her unlikely Louisiana home. But for one wild animal in particular, Louisiana is that last place on earth he belongs.” She’s talking about Tony, a ten-year-old captive Siberian-Bengal tiger.
It’s not just that tigers aren’t native to Louisiana. Tony lives in a concrete-floored enclosure at a truck stop, where he’s exposed to fumes, noise, and harassment from visitors 24-7. He has no enrichment, no way to engage in natural behaviors and he’s been alone since 2003. Tony spends his days pacing the concrete, a sign of stress that’s taking a physical toll on him, too.
Who would condemn an animal to this sad life? Well, besides the truck stop owner, local and state officials are to blame. Most recently, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, which granted a renewed permit allowing Tiger Truck Stop to continue to keep and exhibit Tony … A move that the Animal Legal Defense Fund argues is not only inhumane, but illegal.
Yesterday morning, ALDF filed a lawsuit against the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and its secretary Robert Barham. The case’s co-plaintiffs include two Louisiana residents and former Louisiana Representative Warren Triche, who wrote the state’s law which led to the ban on the private ownership of big exotic cats, including tigers.
Michael Sandlin, the owner of Tiger Truck Stop, has continued to own Tony thanks to shady politics. A local ordinance passed in 1993 made it illegal for anyone to own large exotic cats … anyone, apparently, who wasn’t Michael Sandlin. For years, local officials had a tiger-sized blind spot when it came to Tiger Truck Stop. Then, in 2009, they made Sandlin’s exemption from the law official.
However, that local loophole came too late to qualify Sandlin for the state-level exemption to big cat ownership. According to state regulations, only people who legally owned big cats as of August 15, 2006, could be grandfathered in to permits. In 2006, Sandlin’s ownership of Tony was being ignored, but it was still illegal. That means LDWF has no business renewing his permit.
In addition, ALDF argues that Sandlin’s permit violates state regulations because he doesn’t live on the same premises as Tony.
Last year, more than 15,000 Change.org community members urged the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to deny Tiger Truck Stop’s permit renewal. ALDF filed a legal petition to stop the renewal, too. But Louisiana’s wildlife officials ignored the protests and granted the permit anyway.
Animal Legal Defense Fund isn’t giving up on Tony, and neither should you. Support the lawsuit by sending a message to LDWF to revoke Michael Sandlin’s permit and free Tony.

BATON ROUGE, La. (NBC) — A Louisiana state agency is under fire from a national animal rights group after activists say the organization issued an illegal permit to keep a grown tiger at a truck stop.

Tony the tiger has been the center of controversy since his arrival at Tiger Truck Stop more than a decade ago. Now, an animal rights group has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries for letting Tony’s owner keep him without meeting all the requirements laid out in the Louisiana law. In 2006, former state representative Warren Triche authored a bill that eventually led to the ban on private ownership of big cats, including tigers. “The bill aimed itself at trying to make sure that some organization would be able to have oversight over that captive large animal,” says Triche. The Wildlife and Fisheries Commission was put in charge of regulating those permits. They cited several reasons for their decision to stop issuing permits for new purchase, sale, and ownership of big cats, including the safety and care of the exotic animals and the danger posed to people living in the area. “What happens when a 300 or 400 pound tiger escapes into the general public?” asks Triche. “Who do you call?” Under the new laws people who already owned big cats, like Tony, were only allowed to keep them if they met certain criteria. The lawsuit, filed by the Animal Legal Defense Fund, states that Tony’s owner, Michael Sandlin, did not meet all those requirements. The law states that to keep the exotic pet, you have to live on the same land where the animal is kept. The lawsuit says Sandlin does not live at the truck stop. Still, Sandlin received a “grandfather permit” in 2009 and it was renewed in December 2010. Tony continues to live in a concrete cage right next to the truck stop. “He’s adversely being affected by the habitat that he’s in,” says Triche. Advocates to free Tony say he’s being used as a tourist attraction. “The owner of the cat just uses the cat as a lure into the restaurant and fuel facility there,” says Triche. “His only thought is escape and that’s no way to live.” The goal of the lawsuit is to revoke Sandlin’s permit, so Tony can find a better home, one where he can live the life activists say he deserves. Triche says the bill excludes mascots, like Mike the Tiger, from the ban. A spokesperson for Wildlife and Fisheries says the department is unable to speak about the lawsuit. Tony is attracting celebrity attention. “True Blood” star Kristin Bauer, has joined the forces with the Animal Legal Defense Fund to free Tony.

Tiger Truck Stop owner Michael Sandlin, with his
ward, Tony

Could Michael Sandlin, the imperious Grosse Tete diesel purveyor and tiger jail warden, finally be caught on a technicality?

The Advocate is reporting that an animal rights group has filed a lawsuit against the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries seeking to have Sandlin’s 550-pound Bengal-Siberian tiger, creatively named Tony, removed from the 700-square-foot enclosure at the Tiger Truck Stop on Interstate 10. The roadside attraction once boasted as many as six tigers. Tony is the sole remaining ward of a cage that, when the breeze blows from the west, is downwind from the diesel and gasoline fumes of the shabby truckstop’s pumps.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund filed suit against LDWF challenging the agency’s granting of a “Possession of Potentially Dangerous Wild Quadrupeds, Big Exotic Cats and Non-Human Primates” permit to Sandlin in late 2009, ruling that he should be grandfathered in because he owned the cat prior to the enactment of a 2006 state law prohibiting private ownership of big cats and other exotic animals.

But the Portland, Ore.-based group is challenging Sandlin’s legal ownership of the animal citing a 1993 ordinance in Iberville Parish that also prohibits exotic-animal ownership. If Sandlin didn’t legally own the 10-year-old Tony due to the Iberville law, the suit reasons, he cannot legally be grandfathered in and granted a permit from the state.

Sandlin was unavailable for comment with The Advocate. Read that story here.
And for some perspective, check out The Ind’s Feb. 4, 2009 cover story, “Cat Fight.”
